Abstract

In this paper we shall consider the onset of turbulence in the wake of a charged sphere of microscopic dimensions, later briefly called an “ion”. Since the drag of this ion can be measured with high degree of accuracy, this simple physical system can offer the possibility of detecting events in the non-linear region soon after the Stokes’ regime. This is the case of ions moving in liquid helium, where experimental data are already available, [1] and where dimensional analysis can be applied because of low polarizability of this fluid. Quite recently, the first flow instabilities occurring in the wake of ions in liquid helium have been reconsidered by myself [2]. On this occasion, I shall extend these considerations to the onset of turbulence in the same physical systems at larger drift velocities.
