Zusammenfassung
Die chirurgische Behandlung von Patienten mit Frakturen der Wirbelsäule unabhängig von der Ausprägung neurologischer Ausfallserscheinungen ist sehr unterschiedlich. Die Klassifikation der Verletzungen, die Definition der Stabilität und die Notwendigkeit der chirurgischen Dekompression bzw. Fusion sind nicht präzis definiert. Holdsworth und später Louis versuchten stabile von unstabilen Verletzungen abzugrenzen und nahmen an, daß bei instabilen Frakturen die Stabilisation durch interne Fixation die Heilung insgesamt beschleunigen und größere Schäden vom Nervensystem fernhalten würde.
