Abstract

In patients with cirrhosis of the liver, a high frequency of abnormal carbohydrate tolerance, along with a state of insulin resistance, has been demonstrated (CreutzFeldt et al. 1970). The cause of these alterations is unknown, and the possible implication of elevated circulating growth hormone (Conn and Daughaday 1970), potassium depletion (Podolsky et al. 1973), and increased plasma levels of free fatty acids (Felber et al. 1967) has been considered.
