Abstract

The introduction of radioimmunoassay (RIA) methods in the early 1960s permitted accurate measurement of individual pituitary hormones (Laron 1969) and the diagnosis of various types of pituitary insufficiency (Laron 1981a). It soon became possible not only to deflne a disease entity such as isolated human pituitary growth hormone (hGH) deficiency but also to diagnose partial defects and transitory deficiencies.
