Abstract
There occurs the phenomenon of pearl chain formation above a critical field strength if a suspension of small particles (diameter of approximately 10–4) is exposed to an electromagnetic field. For special cases when the medium and the particles show no dielectric losses, qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis has been given by Krasny-Ergen (1) and Saito (2).This analysis is based on relations for the body forces which are derived from energy principles in electrostatics and cannot be applied when di-electric losses occur (see for example Landau-Lifshitz (3)).
