Abstract

The endocrine pancreas in mammals is organized in numerous small clusters of cells, the islets of Langerhans, consisting of 1000–3000 cells of which the insulin-producing beta-cells amount to about 60–70%. The islets represent only 1–2% of the total pancreas, and it was not before the introduction of the collagenase digestion technique (Moskalewski, 1965) that larger quantities of isolated pancreatic islets could be obtained for biochemical studies (for a review, see Nielsen and Lernmark, 1983).
