Summary
Different Azospirillum strains grown in the presence of tryptophan were checked for auxin production by HPLC and TLC analyses. The highest levels of auxin were obtained both in N2-fixing conditions and in limiting ammonia stationary cultures of strain Sp6. Two mutants of strain Sp6 were shown to be suitable for plant seedlings inoculation, to discriminate between the N2-fixation effect and the hormonal effect on plant growth.
