The Role of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon in PTCA

  • Conference paper
Practice of Coronary Angioplasty

Abstract

The role of the cardiothoracic surgeon is to support the invasive cardiologist when PTCA is performed, a reversal of the relationship which they usually enjoy in the management of patients with ischemic heart disease. It is necessary to have surgical expertise available to manage PTCA complications should they occur. The most frequent indication for emergency surgical intervention is myocardial ischemia.
