Panic and Phobias

Abstract

The present study is part of a research program designed to evaluate the efficacy of exposure therapy in phobic disorders. Therapies were conducted between 1977 and 1982 at the universities of Marburg, Munster, and Bonn, West Germany (Bartling etal. 1980a, 1980b; Fiegenbaum 1985). Here we present the treatment outcome of a group of patients suffering from cardiac phobia. According to recent data of Buller etal. (1985), cardiac phobia represents a subgroup of panic disorder as defined by DSM-III (APA 1980). In our research program, 33 cardiac phobics received individual exposure therapy. A subgroup of these patients received additional group sessions of problem solving therapy. This report focuses on the long-term outcome of these treatments at three-year follow-up.
