Abstract

In a retrospective study tympanoplasties (type III with stapes elevation) of two groups of patients were compared with each other. In group I (101 patients) the stapes elevations, the temporalis fascia grafts for tympanic membrane reconstruction, the grafts of periosteum and cartilage used for repair of defect at the posterior bony meatal wall and the Stacke-II plasty replaced in its original position after tympanoplasty were additionally fixed with fibrin glue (Tissucol). Group II (control group, 102 patients) was operated on without fibrin glue. It could be shown in group I that the fascia grafts for tympanic membrane grafting healed, more safety and with less complications. The external auditory canal, however, healed equally well in both groups. Early hearing results of type-Ill tympanoplasty could be improved by fixing the stapes elevations with fibrin glue. The use of fibrin glue in ear surgery can be definitely recommended.
