Zusammenfassung

Family therapy, based on system theory and systems thinking, has become- an established treatment model for psychological disturbances and Problems. It has about the same amount of success as other treatment methods with a longer clinical history for instance individual- and group psychotherapy. GURMAN and KNISKERN in a large review (1980) of family therapy outcome research note that figures from 200 studies show that 73% of the family cases improve. However, in a review of process research in family therapy, PINSOF (1980) concludes that we still know very little about what more specifically calls for good results among the different therapist-patient- and setting variables. HOROWITZ (1981) describes three paradigms for psychotherapy research: contrast group design, the relational paradigm and the descriptive approach. In order to explain and not only to show a difference between for instance two different treatment methods (shown by a contrast group design) there must be some knowledge of the important variables in the therapies and how these variables interrelate (studied within the relational paradigm).Research in this field relies on good and reliable theory-based descriptions i.e. a suitable family diagnosis.
