Abstract

Among the gastropods, planorbid snails are the only species that make use of hemecontaining erythrocruorin, rather than the copper containing hemocyanin, as oxygen carrier. The first structural study of a planorbid erythrocruorin was carried out by Svedberg & Eriksson-Quensel (1). Recent studies include those on erythrocruorin from Biomphalaria glabrata (2), Planorbis corneus (3) and Helisoma trivolvis (4). The present report is concerned with the quaternary structure of Helisoma trivolvis erythrocruorin. Our main goal was the determination of the number of polypeptide chains in the molecule.
