Abstract
Clinical research in primary liver cancer has made rapid progress in the past 2 decades. Especially in the past decade operative results have been greatly improved along with the development of current diagnostic technique, the innovation of surgical operation, and the extensive application of therapy combining Chinese traditional and Western medicine. Operative mortality has been reduced from 25% in the 1960s to less than 10% now. Operative results in small cancer are even more encouraging not only with low operative mortalities but also with a 5-year survival rate as high as 55%–60% [1]. In our hospital, 1745 patients with primary liver cancer were admitted from January 1960 to April 1984; 937 patients (53.7%) were explored operatively. Of these patients, 400 were given resections, a resection rate of 42.7%. In the following we report on our experience in the hepatectomies of these 400 patients.
