Abstract

In my previous review (EICHENLAUB 1984) on prokaryotic replication I have discussed to some extent plasmid systems which have become important for the questions of regulation of replication and partitioning of genomes. Especially one bacterial plasmid, the F factor of Escherichia coli, is of interest from the historical point of view, since the first hypothesis put forward on the regulation of replication and the mechanism of partitioning was based mainly on studies of the F factor (JACOB et al. 1963). Afterwards, bacteriophage systems like the single-stranded DNA phages M13 and ØX174 became of predominant importance, since they allowed the study of the enzymatic aspects of replication in vitro which is meanwhile extended to the more complex double-stranded plasmid and phage DNA molecules.
