Zusammenfassung
Das vielgestaltige Vollbild der HIV-Infektion, das eigentliche „acquired immune deficiency Syndrome“ (AIDS), ist durch opportunistische Infektionen und bösartige Tumoren gekennzeichnet, die für den infausten Verlauf der Erkrankung verantwortlich sind. Dabei wird die klinische Symptomatik weniger von erreger- oder tumorspezifischen Eigenschaften bestimmt, als durch die Lokalisation und pathogenetischen Folgen der einzelnen Komplikationen, die durch die geschwächte Immunabwehr auftreten. Aufgrund seiner engen anatomischen und funktionellen Zusammenhänge gilt dies auch besonders für das Nervensystem, dessen Beteiligung erheblich zur Morbidität und Mortalität bei AIDS beiträgt. Neben sekundären begleitenden Erkrankungen des Nervensystems konnte in letzter Zeit auch ein primärer Befall des zentralen (Shaw et al. 1985) und peripheren (Ho et al. 1985) Nervensystems durch das „human immunodeficiency virus“ (HIV) gezeigt werden. Die möglichen Wirkungen des HIV am Nervensystem in den verschiedenen Krankheitsstadien sind Gegenstand intensiver Forschung, bei denen auch die gleichzeitige Beteiligung anderer Erreger, z.B. des Zytomegalovirus, zu berücksichtigen ist.
