The Reaction of Carbon Monoxide with Chemisorbed Oxygen on Pd(110): An Example of a Structure-Sensitive Reaction

Abstract

The oxidation of carbon monoxide on palladium surfaces comprises one of the most extensively studied model systems in heterogeneous catalysis. The reaction has been investigated on the low index crystal surfaces by a variety of experimental techniques, and it was found that the temperature dependence of the steady state reaction on Pd {111}, {110}, {210}, {100} and polycrystalline palladium shows almost no difference [1]. Because of this apparent insensitivity with respect to surface structure, it was concluded that the reaction is “structure-insensitive” and it is therefore widely regarded as the prime example of a heterogeneous catalytic reaction not dependent on surface topography.
