Infrared Studies of Ionic Hydration in Aqueous Solutions

Interactions of Water in Ionic and Nonionic Hydrates

Abstract

A method for the study of ionic hydration in aqueous solutions using infrared spectroscopy has recently been developed (Kristiansson 1984 a,b). The quantitative aspect of this method has been further developed, and concentration studies using Ni(C104)2 and Ni(BF4)2 have been performed (Kristiansson 1987). A relation between the spectra and the number of coordinated water molecules as well as reliable band parameters for the different hydration bands were obtained. In the present contribution we will discuss some results for NaC104, LiC104, Ca(C104)2 and Mg(C104)2 solutions.
