Abstract
Synthesis of hemolysis has been reported throughout a broad spectrum of gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial species. The in vitro action of hemolysins ultimately causes physical damage to a variety of eukaryotic cells. Bacterial products possessing such a membrane-damaging action have been termed cytolysins and for many of the hemolysins, a general cytolytic action on mammalian cells has been demonstrated.
