Abstract
A survey of 596 healthy young male individuals was conducted to evaluate public awareness of testicular cancer. Only 5.3% of all participants answered correctly all questions on the questionnaire. The results of the study reveal lack of information mainly concerning the points relevant for early detection. Participants with a lower level of general education were shown to have a significantly higher grade of unawareness. There is need for distribution of more specific information among the public. The technique of periodic testicular self-examination has to be propagated by physicians and national institutions.
Zusammenfassung
596 junge Männer wurden nach den Symptomen, Heilungsmöglichkeiten und nach dem Stellenwert der Selbstuntersuchung bei Hodenkrebs gefragt. Nur 5,3% der Teilnehmer beantworteten alle Fragen korrekt. Besonders schlecht war das Wissen in den für die Früherkennung wichtigen Fragen. Bei Teilnehmern mit Hauptschulabschluß war das Wissensdefizit signifikant größer als bei denen mit Abitur. — Verstärkte Informationsverbreitung durch Ärzte und staatliche Organisationen ist erforderlich.
