Abstract

Neurenteric cysts are heterotopic intraspinal cysts lined with mucosa of the alimentary tract. They vary considerably in size and in the type of mucosal lining. The lesions need to be distinguished from spinal ependymal cysts (cf. Chap. 18) or from teratomas. Neurenteric cysts may be found incidentally in newborns, or they become symptomatic later in life. Approximately threefourths of the published cases were observed during the first 6 months, the rest in juveniles or young adults. Males outnumber females by 3:1. The relevant literature was reviewed by Agnoli et al. (1984).
