  • Chapter
Bioethik in den USA

Zusammenfassung

Sieht man sich folgende Artikel an, die in letzter Zeit auf dem biomedizinischen Sektor erschienen sind: „Preventive screening for the fragile X syndrome“ (Turner et al. 1986), „Cost-benefit analysis of a thalassemia disease prevention program“ (Ostrowsky u. Lippman 1985), „Screening program for the prevention of down’s syndrome“ (Stein et al. 1973), „Embryo transfer in the prevention of genetic disease“ (Pembrey 1979) und „Can genetic screening prevent occupational disease“ (Powledge 1976), so fällt einem auf, daß sie alle 2 Dinge miteinander verknüpfen: ein Grundanliegen des öffentlichen Gesundheitswesens — die Prävention — und die Gentechnologie: In meinen Ausführungen möchte ich den ethischen und gesellschaftlichen Problemen nachgehen, die durch die Möglichkeit des Einsatzes der Biotechnologie zur Krankheitsverhütung aufgeworfen werden.

Professorin für Public Health, Health Policy and Management an der Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore/MD; Senior Research Scholar am Kennedy Institute of Ethics der Georgetown University in Washington/DC; z.
