Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) allows clear visualization of gastrointestinal tumors, by directly approaching target lesions via the lumen with a high-frequency ultrasonic beam. This technique allows detailed analysis of all layers of the gastrointestinal wall architecture, presently a shortcoming of conventional diagnostic techniques [1–12]. In addition, real-time dynamic properties allow detailed visualization of tumor penetration including extension into surrounding lymph nodes and major vascular structures. Assessment of resectability is thereby improved. Biliary and pancreatic tumors can also be studied through the stomach and duodenal wall. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the accuracy, limitations, and clinical usefulness of EUS in determining the resectability of gastrointestinal malignancy.
