Abstract

The senescence of plant cells has been associated with the de novo synthesis of a great number of proteins (Laurière, 1983; Sabater,1986). It becomes more and more clear however, that the cessation of the synthesis of some proteins may also play an important role in the loss of some cellular functions. It has been shown, for instance, that several mRNAs present in mature tissues disappear during the senescence process (Schuster and Davies, 1983). A shift in the hormonal balance is probably responsible for these changes: increased synthesis or action of senescence-promoting hormones (ethylene and ABA) and decreased synthesis or action of senescence-retarding hormones (auxins and cytokinins).
