Abstract
Manual contour tracing in echocardiograms suffers from large inter- and in-traobserver variation and is a tedious, time-consuming procedure. As a result, quantitative assessment of left ventricular (LV) wall motion is not routinely performed in echocardiographic studies. Various groups have attempted to detect the endocardial contours automatically in echocardiograms (Adam et al. 1987; Chu et al. 1987; Ezekiel et al. 1987; Grube et al. 1985; Kuwahara et al. 1980; Skorton et al. 1986), but these efforts have not yet resulted in routinely applicable approaches. Automated contour detection on echocardiograms is rather difficult because of the relatively poor image quality, the possible occurrence of dropouts, the high noise level, and disturbances in the images by valves, papillary muscles, etc.
