Zusammenfassung
Das „acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome“oder „Aids“wurde erstmals 1981 beschrieben, als erkannt wurde, daß der seltene opportunistische Infektionserreger Pneumocystis carinii bei homosexuellen Männern eine Lungenentzündung hervorrief. Die ersten dieser Fälle kamen aus New York City und Los Angeles/CA (Gottlieb 1981; Friedman-Kien et al. 1981). Als die Anzahl der in dieser Weise Erkrankten anwuchs und weitere opportunistische Infektionen und Tumoren dem Krankheitsbild hinzuzurechnen waren, wurde es offensichtlich, daß das zugrundeliegende Problem der Krankheit im Immunsystem zu suchen war. Durch eine Kombination epidemiologischer und biologischer Forschung wurde dann 1983 das „human immunodeficiency virus“oder „HIV“als Ursache erkannt (Barre-Sinoussi et al. 1983; Gallo et al. 1984). Seither hat sich die Kenntnis des Virus und seiner Übertragung, des klinischen Charakters von Aids und der epidemiologischen Verteilung auf der Welt zu einem komplexen Bild entwickelt, wenn auch eine Reihe von Fragen offen bleibt. Goldsmith (1988) schätzt, daß z. Z. weltweit 10 Mio. Menschen infiziert sind und somit an Aids erkranken können.
