Abstract
Traditionally, the object to be explained by both syntax and semantics is the sentence. For the artificial languages of logic, this is simply a feature built into their definitions. But to what extent do natural languages correspond to this view? The sentences of a formal language are usually independent of each other and form, at best, sets of sentences, whereas natural language sentences form texts and are usually context dependent. The answer to our question will thus depend on the degree of similarity or difference between a text and a set of sentences.
