Abstract
Arp 299 (Mrk 171) is an interacting pair of galaxies — NGC 3690 (west) and IC 694 (east). In the optical both galaxies appear very irregular, dominated by several bright knots with typical diameters of 2–3″ (400–600 pc at a distance of 41 Mpc). In the infrared and radio there axe three dominant knots, designated as A, B, and C (Gehrz, Sramek, and Weedman 1983). While source A coincides with the center of IC 694 (see Fig. 1), sources B and C are very bright extranuclear H Ii regions south and north of the kinematical center of NGC 3690. The peak in the R band is 2″.5 northwest of source B and coincides with source B2 in high resolution K band images (Eales et al. 1987). It is approximately at the kinematical center of NGC 3690.
