Sleep Disturbances in Children: From the Physiological to the Clinical

  • Conference paper
Brain and Behavior in Child Psychiatry

Abstract

During childhood, more than one child in two has a sleep problem, ranging from a simple transitory episode such as nocturnal awakening to a genuine sleep disorder such as narcolepsy. Although there may exist a familial or other predisposition to sleep disorders, conditions affecting child development such as material, familial, and emotional factors and general upbringing may favor the persistence and even the emergence of sleep disorders. The sleep of children is more vulnerable than that of the adult, since this complex function—like other functions—undergoes a slow maturation. A developmental problem of sleep function, whether the cause is exogenous or endogenous, not only may result in sleep disorders during childhood and extending into adult life, but also may be the cause of certain behavioral disorders.
