Nutritional Myopathy: Selenium-Vitamin E Deficiency, Rat and Mouse

Abstract

In affected young rats and mice, generalized involvement of the skeletal musculature may be seen. The muscles may have scattered white longitudinal streaks or show diffuse involvement with a dry, gritty white to yellow-gray appearance (Mason 1973) (Fig. 161). The lesions are bilaterally symmetric. In adult rats with long-term vitamin E deficiency, the muscles show marked atrophy and appear yellowish-brown with pale streaks (Telford 1971).
