The Implantable Cardioverter/Defibrillator

Abstract

The automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) was developed by Mirowski in order to treat patients surviving sudden cardiac death [1]. After early studies had confirmed that the device was able to reliably sense malignant tachycardias and could terminate them, this therapeutic modality rapidly gained in popularity [2].
