Abstract
Severe anaemia develops in patients with osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma who are treated with chemotherapy before and after operation. In most cases patients require multiple blood transfusions. The aetiology of anaemia in these tumour patients may be multifactorial. It may be caused in part by the cytotoxic effect of chemotherapeutic agents on the bone marrow. Inappropriately low erythropoietin levels, reduced responsiveness to erythropoietin, elevated levels of tumour necrosis factor leading to a decrease in erythropoietin responsiveness may be further potential causes [1–5].
