Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a major cause of morbidity amongst elderly men and is reported to have an incidence of 88% amongst men in their 90s [3]. With advances in other fields of medicine and increasing longevity, the number of patients requiring treatment for this complaint will inevitably increase. Already it is estimated that a 50-year-old man has a 20%–25% chance of requiring a prostatectomy during his lifetime [4], and more than 300 000 prostatectomies are performed in the United States annually. This represents an enormous financial burden to health services and private insurance companies.
