Abstract
Sugarcane, a sweet reed, has attracted the attention of many, from monks to monarchs. Modern sugarcane is a complex hybrid of two or more of five species of the genus Saccharum and belongs to the family Poaceae, subfamily Panicoideae, tribe Andripogoneae and subtribe Saccharininae. Heinz (1987) stated that this subtribe has two natural groupings, i.e. Saccharastrae and Eulaliastrae, but which are not formal taxonomic units. Presently, this giant grass is grown in an area of 16 million hectares in over 79 countries.
