Abstract

Other volumes in this series cover the contributions of Eugene Wigner, the Scientist and the Statesman; the present volume is devoted to the contributions of the Natural Philosopher that place him in a lineage starting in the 17th century, gaining legitimacy in the Enlightenment, and leading through the general methodology of the Positivist School. The tenets of the latter could still be maintained during his early formative years: “... The first physics book I read said: ‘Atoms and molecules may exist, but this is irrelevant from the point of view of physics’; and this was entirely correct — at that time physics dealt only with macroscopic phenomena and Brownian motion was sort of a miracle” [1].
