Abstract
Fracture care at the close of the twentieth century has evolved into an area of specialisation for the orthopaedic surgeon. In its evolution over the past 30 years we have seen the role of non-operative treatment better defined, the advancement of internal fixation techniques and materials, a better understanding of the limb as a complete functional unit and subsequently an appreciation that fractures always involve damage to the soft-tissue envelope. In this era we have also witnessed the development of the external fixator from an option in the care of severe open fractures to a versatile instrument in the arena of trauma care.
