Abstract

Paradoxically, although agroforestry is a well-known traditional land-use system, it has only recently been taken on board by development experts as a new technology. Whereas in most western countries trees are generally considered to be incompatible with cropping or grazing, agroforestry is currently attracting much interest because of environmental awareness of the ecological problems related to monocultures and of the food and fuelwood shortages in many developing countries.
