Statistical Study of Soil Respiration: Calculation of Present Day Rates and Anticipation for a Double CO2 World

Soil Responses to Climate Change

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASII,volume 23))

Summary

On a global scale, soil respiration rates are positively correlated with mean annual air temperature and mean annual precipitation. In this work, we present and test different regressions of soil types. We use these regressions to calculate present day rates of respiration and those expected for a double CO2 world. The global CO2 flux is estimated to be 60 Gt C yr−1. Using climatic fields calculated with a GCM for a double CO2 world, the flux is higher by 20%. This increase can produce a positive feedback to the greenhouse effect.
