Summary

Balloon valvuloplasty of congenital pulmonic and aortic stenosis in infants and children nowadays is considered to be an effective curative or palliative cardiological intervention with good or even better immediate and longterm results compared to the post surgical outcome. A few patients only with thickened and dysplastic valves, not amenable to balloon dilatation need surgery. In experienced centers the complication rate of the intervention is low. Treatment without thoracotomy and extracorporal circulation reduces not only the stay in hospital but also the costs in general and obviously offers the patient only benefits.
