Abstract
In 1988, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) inaugurated research and related development on electrically powered, implantable total artificial heart systems. This program was based on the principles established and experience gained with ventricular assist devices and on the knowledge gained from investigator-initiated artificial heart research at the University of Utah, Penn State University, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
