Abstract
Since Pare’s definition of varicocele in the year 1500 as “a mass of melancholy blood,” the problem of a correlation between venous scrotal ectasiae and fertility impairment has continued the subject of controversy. Still today the surgical correction of varicose veins is considered by many andrologists indispensable for functional reestablishment of spermatogenesis, while this is denied by others. There are indeed many different approaches to the problem of infertility in men, and there are too many aspects of the problem to allow a standardization of criteria and the establishment of indications for the surgical treatment of varicocele. The legitimate question of the patient is always the same: “Will the procedure be useful or not?”
