Zusammenfassung

Das Mediastinum ist zwischen beiden Lungenflügeln gelegen und nach lateral beiderseits von Pleurablättern begrenzt, nach oben reicht es bis in die Thoraxapertur, nach unten bis zum Zwerchfell, vorne ist es vom Sternum und den Rippenknorpeln, hinten von der Wirbelsäule begrenzt. Die Umrisse des Mediastinum werden im Sagittalbild im wesentlichen von den großen Gefäßen und dem Herzen, bei jungen Kindern und besonders Säuglingen auch vom Thymus bestimmt (s. Abb. 1 a). Da im Mediastinum auf engem Raum zahlreiche Organsysteme vereinigt sind, die sich gegenseitig überlagern, ist das Seitenbild bedeutend informativer (s. Abb. lb)).
