Abstract

The techniques of large-scale animal cell culture technology have been in use for almost 30 years now and have become increasingly important in the development and production of biological products of commercial interest (see Arathoon and Birch 1986). Some of the first products produced by large-scale cell culture methods included human vaccines (e.g., polio, rubella), veterinary vaccines (e.g., foot and mouth disease, FMD) and interferon-α. More recently, an increasing number of recombinant DNA-derived products have been coming onto the market including cytokines, hormones and vaccines along with monoclonal antibodies for diagnostic and therapeutic use.
