Atopy and Herpetic Keratitis

Summary

15 patients with multi-recurrent acute and/or corticodependant forms of herpes of the cornea were found to be atopic. The hyposensitization treatment with house-dust and mites extract to which these patients were allergic seemed to be effective on both frequency of the recurrences and the level of corticodependance.

The explanation for such favourable findings remains unclear. But these results seem to indicate that the association to an atopic state should be cautiously evaluated in all cases of chronic herpetic keratitis since the allergologic treatment may be a useful and inoffensive means for improving those patients.

Zusammenfassung

Wir fanden 15 Patienten mit chronisch rezidivierendem oder steroidabhängigem Herpes corneae and gleichzeitiger Atopie. Die Desensibilisierungsbehandlung mit Hausstaubund Milben-Antigenen, auf die diese Patienten allergisch reagiert hatten, scheint sich sowohl auf die Häufigkeit der Rezidive als auch auf den Grad der Cortisonabhängigkeit günstig ausgewirkt zu haben.

Eine Erklärung für dieses günstige Resultat ist nicht einfach zu geben. Wir schließen aber aus unseren Ergebnissen, daß man bei allen Patienten mit chronischer Herpeskeratitis einen allergologischen Status erheben sollte, weil man mit einer Desensibilisierungsbehandlung u.U. ein nützliches und gefahrloses Therapiemittel in der Hand hat.
