Abstract

The physics of imperfect crystalline solids involves a vast class of phenomena. In the wide sense of the word, imperfections in solids include point defects (vacancies, impurities) and their aggregates, various types of dislocations, stacking faults, grain boundaries as well as surfaces. Besides being physically interesting and challenging in their own right, imperfections in crystals are important in technological materials science, greatly influencing the macroscopic physical world around us. There exists an enormous literature covering the many facets of the broad topic of defected solids. Recent reviews, which emphasize an atomistic approach include [4.1–6].
