Two-Phase Mass Flow Rate Measurements with Pitot Tubes and Density Measurements

Measuring Techniques in Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flows

Abstract

Two-phase mass flow rate measurement by Pitot tubes (fixed Pitot tubes or a traversable Pitot tube) in combination with density (void fraction) measurements by a five beam gamma densitometer or a traversable impedance probe are presented. The experiments were performed in steady-state, horizontal air-water and steam-water pipe flows. Three pipe diameters of 16, 20 and 50 mm were used. The test matrix covered both high mass fluxes (dispersed flow regime with fairly axisymmetric phase and velocity distributions) and lower mass fluxes (distributions dominated by stratification due to gravity). In both cases a high degree of accuracy is obtained. In the former case, the measurement technique can be simplified without a significant decrease in accuracy by using only one Pitot tube and a single density measurement. In the latter case, the gamma densitometer can be replaced by a simple traversing impedance probe.
