Abstract
A study is made of the ground state of an ionic adlayer with repulsive long range interaction. The method for constructing commensurate structures is presented for the simplest cases of coverage. The lower bound for the ground-state energy is given as a function of the coverage. A misfit between an ordered structure due to the intrinsic interaction between adatoms and the substrate structure is discussed. It is found that for the square lattice of the substrate, the adlayer is frustrated over a whole range of coverage, and for the regular triangular lattice, the adlayer is unfrustrated for a certain class of coverage.
