Abstract

System Development Corporation has performed a number of evaluations of relational database management systems (RDBMS) to determine their capabilities and performance. We have developed a set of databases and queries to use in these evaluations. Among the problems faced have been: how to perform comparable operations on DMBSs with dissimilar capabilities and optimization strategies, blunders in the DBMS internal query optimizers which sometimes cause dramatic sensitivity to the order of presentation of the query, and even a few obscure bugs in some systems.
