Abstract

As a reaction against radical mastectomy, breast conservation in the treatment of breast cancer has rapidly gained popularity, both among the lay public and among members of the medical profession. Breast conservation is neither a new type of treatment nor will it abolish the psychosocial trauma of breast cancer. Still, there are many reasons to believe that it will continue to constitute an alternative to mastectomy in the treatment of this disease.
