Summary

The possible role of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in the pathogenesis of the impaired excretion of sodium and water in patients with liver cirrhosis is still controversially discussed. High concentrations of circulating ANP in most patients with cirrhosis and a normal responsiveness of ANP secretion to volume expansion support a role of the peptide as an indicator of plasma volume. The impaired diuretic and natriuretic effect of exogenous ANP suggests an impaired renal action of ANP in cirrhosis which may be a cofactor for sodium and water retention in cirrhosis.
