Abstract

Hypermedia is, de facto, a kind of representation medium. Its use has profoundly affected the way we think about the nature of representation with respect to interpretation and representation use.

Here I examine the connections between AI and hypermedia by surveying a variety of current efforts to place AI into hypermedia, or vice versa. These discussions are grounded by examples drawn from our experiences with Notecards (the Xerox hypermedia system) and IDE (a Xerox instructional design system built on top of Notecards).

Because of these experiences in using hypermedia as our representational medium, we have had a shift in thinking about representations. These changes come about as a consequence of building and using hypermedia systems that use tools from artificial intelligence. Not only has this experience made us understand the relationship between hypertext structures and representation perse more deeply, but it also indicates some possibly fruitful paths for the development of future hypertext systems.
